PBDM Course-Related Procedures

Registration

Courses are offered on a paced basis with specific start and completion dates. Subject to the approval of the MBA Program Director, students may be permitted to take more than one course at a time. Upon admission to a program of study, students will receive a timetable outlining course start and completion dates for the cohort group to which they belong.

Subject to approval, students may be permitted to take courses within the same phase in any order except for STMT 500 Strategic Management, which must be successfully completed before students can progress to any other course.

Program Deferrals

Students are automatically pre-registered in courses according to the course schedule set on the date that they commence the program. This schedule is set by the Centre for Innovative Management, Faculty of Business.

A student is considered registered for a course on the 21st day before the course start date indicated on the student's schedule. Timelines for registration and course withdrawals for residential courses vary and are outlined in the Student Handbook.

Students who have started the program can defer their studies should they find themselves experiencing changed circumstances in either their business or personal lives. A deferral must be requested before the 21st day before the start date for the student's next pre-registered or registered course to avoid being charged a withdrawal fee.

Course Withdrawal

After the above-mentioned 21-day period, students can withdraw from the course in which they are pre-registered or registered subject to the following.

  • To avoid academic penalty, a course withdrawal must occur no later than 14 calendar days after the start of a course. A course withdrawal fee must be paid in full.
  • Withdrawals will not occur by default. Withdrawal requests must be submitted by a student to the appropriate areas, within the regulated time frames (21 days before a course starts or 14 days following the start date of a course).
  • Students withdrawing after 14 days from the start date of the course will fail the course and a WF (withdrawal fail) will appear on their transcript. Full course tuition will be required to re-register in the course.
  • Students who do not withdraw and do not complete a course will fail the course and a F (fail) will be awarded. Full course tuition will be required to re-register in the course.

Incomplete Status

Under extraordinary circumstances, students may receive permission for an incomplete status for a course but they must submit such a request to the academic coach before the end date for the course. The academic coach will seek approval from the course manager to grant incomplete status.

If approved, students will have up to a maximum of 30 calendar days to complete the outstanding individual written assignments (as approved). Group assignments and participation components of the course are not included under this policy.

Re-Registrations and Repeats

Students who fail a course in the PBDM program, may repeat that course only once. Full tuition will be required for each course repeated. In all cases, the higher of the original or repeat grade will be counted.

Students who fail the same course twice will be withdrawn from the program with no chance for appeal or re-registration.

Students who fail the comprehensive examination may repeat the examination only once. An appropriate fee will be charged for repetition of the examination and the student must wait until the next scheduled offering of the examination to re-write it. Students who fail the second writing of the comprehensive examination will be expelled from their program of study with no opportunity for re-enrolment.

Active Status and Continuation

To maintain active status, students must complete and achieve a successful passing grade in at least one course in their program of study within any given 12-month period. The comprehensive examination is considered part of the requirement for maintaining active status. Students who do not maintain active status will be deemed to have withdrawn from the program and pay the tuition portion for courses completed and in which they are currently registered.

Withdrawal from the Program

Students may withdraw from the PBDM program by completing the Centre for Innovative Management, Faculty of Business, Program Withdrawal Form. Students who choose to withdraw from the PBDM, without record of registration, must do so within 30 calendar days after the program start date. A withdrawal occurring during this time will not be recorded on the student’s transcript. Students who withdraw from a program after the 30 calendar-day period from the start of program will

  1. have the withdrawal recorded on their transcript.
  2. pay the tuition portion for courses completed and in which they are currently registered.

Re-Enrolment in the Program

Re-enrolment in a program can occur, but is subject to re-application, review and approval by the MBA Program Director, and payment of all applicable fees. Students will be required to pay any fee increases that occur between the time of their last enrolment and re-enrolment. Credit for courses previously completed will be re-evaluated and applied to the program requirements, where appropriate.

Refunds

Tuition paid is refunded after the tuition portion for the courses completed, and currently registered in, and any outstanding administrative fees are processed.

Computer System Requirements

Access to a microcomputer is mandatory for the completion of assignments and contact with other students, faculty, and CIM, Faculty of Business. The faculty of Business maintains a current list of technical requirements.

Examinations

Students must undertake a comprehensive examination upon completion of the PBDM program. This examination will be scheduled at least twice each year, as determined by the MBA Program Director. The comprehensive examination is graded on a pass/fail basis, and a grade of 70 per cent is required for a pass. Review Re-Registrations and Repeats above, for examination re-write information.

Grading System

Each assignment and participation component that is to be counted towards the final grade for a course shall be given a percentage grade from the academic coach. The official recorded grade, however, will be the Alpha/4.0 grading scale (below). Students registered in courses with start dates before September 1, 2004 will be graded according to the applicable former Alpha or percentage grade scale.

For courses starting on or after September 1, 2004, the following scale is now effective. Please review the Graduate Grading Policy and Academic Records FAQ for more information.

In exceptional circumstances, extensions of up to one year will be considered by the CIM Executive Director and will require the payment of a fee.
