MBA Program Information
Admission to AU MBA programs occurs three times each year, in fall, winter, and spring.
The MBA program is divided into two distinct phases. Courses are offered on a paced basis with specific start and completion dates, and in sequential order within Phase 1 and Phase 2. Before students begin their program, they are required to take a one-week orientation course.
A total of 48 credits is required for the completion of an AU MBA program. Phase 1 consists of an orientation and six, 3-credit courses. Phase 2 consists of four, 3-credit courses; three, 3-credit electives; and an applied project equivalent to 9 credits. Also required is the comprehensive examination at the end of Phase 1.
Subject to approval of the MBA Program Director, students may be permitted to take more than one course at a time. Athabasca University may modify the list of available courses at any time.
A minimum grade of 60 per cent is required for both the assignments and participation components in each course. The comprehensive examination is graded on a pass/fail basis, and an overall grade of 70 percent is required to pass.
Students will be permitted to register for one elective or Phase 2 course following the successful completion of the six Phase 1 core courses. Only one such course registration will be permitted before successful completion of the Phase 1 Comprehensive Examination. If the examination is not successfully completed, the student will be permitted to complete the course or elective in which he/she is currently registered; however, the student will then be required to defer his/her program of study until successful completion of the examination occurs.
It is each student’s responsibility to ensure that any course and/or examination participation and any assignments and/or examination requirements are maintained and submitted on time. There will be no leniency or considerations given to the students who choose a double course workload. Exemptions to these requirements may be made only by the MBA Program Director.
Upon successful completion of Phase 1, including the comprehensive examination and submission of the Application for Graduation Form, students may be awarded the Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Management.
Students will normally complete the MBA program in two and a half years. Students must complete their studies within five years of their initial enrolment in the program.
