7.3 Examination Centres

Athabasca University has its own examination centres located in Athabasca, Edmonton, and Calgary, Alberta. In addition, an Examination Invigilation Network has been established, composed of many post-secondary institutions across Canada.

If you wish to write your examination at a location other than those listed in the Examination Invigilation Network, you must write at an accredited post-secondary institution such as a community college or a technical institute. If a college or technical institute is not accessible, you may write your examination at an educational institution such as a high school or library, provided it is approved by Examination Services, Office of the Registrar.

Please review the Examination Invigilation Network Web site. And please, arrive on time.

7.3.1 Arrive on Time!

Arrive promptly for your scheduled examination invigilation appointment. Latecomers can be extremely disruptive to other students writing examinations.  If you arrive more than 15 minutes late for a scheduled examination, and you have not notified your exam invigilator in advance, you will be required to rebook your exam for another date and time, and pay the multiple exam fee (payable if you are unable to rebook within five business days. Review Section 7.5 Unwritten Examinations.).

Whenever possible, Athabasca University will accommodate moderately late arrivals; however, you will risk being interrupted if others leave the room before you are finished writing your examination.   Allowing additional time may not always be possible. Please contact the institution where you are writing, and it will advise you whether or not there is time to write your examination. If you still choose to write with less than the recommended time allowed, this will be noted on your examination in the case of future appeals.

7.3.2 Centres Within Canada

If you live within 100 km of an examination centre, you must write your examination at that centre. You are not required to use the centre closest to you.

If you live more than 100 km from an examination centre, you may write your examination closer to home provided you arrange for an invigilator who is willing to invigilate your examination and who meets Athabasca University's invigilator guidelines described in Section 7.4.1.

Please arrive on time.

Examinations written at Athabasca University, Athabasca, Alberta, are invigilated by the Office of the Registrar at two times daily, 9 a.m. or 1 p.m., Monday through Friday (excluding public and University holidays). Examination times at Athabasca University's Edmonton and Calgary Learning Centres in Alberta, are indicated when you use the following online exam request forms.

Edmonton
Calgary

7.3.3 Centres Outside Canada

Non-Canadian students and Canadian students who are living outside of Canada, must write their examinations at an approved post-secondary institution or a Canadian Embassy. Please arrive on time.

7.3.4 Grouped Study Courses

Unless approval has been obtained in advance by the Athabasca University course coordinator, grouped study students write their examinations at the same place, date, and time. The examination is coordinated by the Athabasca University grouped study course professor. Please arrive on time.

7.3.5 Students with Disabilities

Students who require special accommodations, or who require their examinations in an alternative format, will be advised and requested to book examinations 30 business days in advance in order to allow the University additional preparation time.

7.3.6 Online Examinations

An increasing number of Athabasca University examinations are completed and submitted online. If your course requires you to complete an online examination, contact your invigilator first to ensure that the invigilation centre where you plan to write can accommodate an online examination (i.e., Internet access with Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher). Please direct your questions about online examinations to your course tutor or to the School of Business Call Centre.

All other examination regulations apply to online exams. You must complete and submit the Examination Request Form to Examination Services using the methods described in Section 7.2.
