Undergraduate Programs
University Certificate in Computing and Information Systems

Regulations effective September 1, 2007

Students complete the program regulations in effect at the time of their enrolment.

The University Certificate in Computing and Information Systems is designed to provide a solid educational base in information systems, to be the equivalent of a minor in Information Systems, and to qualify students for employment opportunities.

The programming language requirements for new students of the program are COMP 268 (Java) and COMP 272 (Java), as noted below. Those already in a program may graduate with other combinations of programming language(s) in introductory programming and data structures. Refer to the website for descriptions of the various acceptable and suitable combinations.

By completing different combinations of courses described in the program, graduates can specialize in different IT areas such as database management, system administration, computer programming, or Web development. Moreover, graduates may use the credits in their future program studies if they wish to pursue a bachelor degree.
Students who have not yet completed an acceptable combination of courses, should consult with the Program Director to determine which course(s) they should take that will satisfy the requirements. Some courses will begin to specify Java as a prerequisite, but usually allow other possibilities. As you complete the certificate, we recommend that you take no more than three COMP courses simultaneously.

Athabasca University advisors have developed a Program Plan to assist you, or you can email Advising Services.
