8.11 Library

Athabasca University Library has a wealth of information available on its website as well as a substantial collection of online, print, and audiovisual resources. Library resources are available to Athabasca University students, faculty, and staff for reference and research purposes in support of Athabasca University courses and programs. Requests for library resources or services can be made to the Library Information Desk 24 hours a day by phone, email, fax, or mail.

Responses to most requests are handled within 24 hours or by the next business day. Borrowed materials are normally mailed to your home address along with a return-mail card.

Active students who are registered in a course are entitled to

• borrow library materials and search the Library's online catalogue (AUCAT)

• access resources through the Library's website including full text journal databases and e-books

• expect to receive library instruction and research assistance

• request interlibrary loan services for journal articles.

Supplementary Materials

University courses often require the use of material beyond the learning resources package. These supplementary materials are referenced in your learning resources package and may be requested from Athabasca University Library or may be available through local libraries.

Digital Reading Room

Through the Library's Information Portal, members of the AU community have access to a considerable number of online resources. These resources include more than 200 subscription journal databases,
32,000 + journals, more than 30,000 electronic books, and selected websites. The Digital Reference Centre provides access to online dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases, etc. The Help Centre offers assistance with topics such as referencing sources, using the Internet, and researching.

AU Library Information Portal

Through the Library's Information Portal, members of the AU community have access to a considerable number of online resources. These resources include more than 200 subscription journal databases, 32,000 + journals, more than 30,000 electronic books, and selected Web sites. The Digital Reference Centre provides access to online dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases, etc. The Help Centre offers assistance with topics such as referencing sources, using the Internet, and researching.

Database Access

Athabasca University Library subscribes to more than 200 databases that can be accessed by Athabasca University students, faculty, and staff. A list of online resources is provided on the Library's website, under the heading “Databases.”

Resources licensed for Athabasca University use will ask for identification and user verification. A dialog box will appear in which you must type your name and Athabasca University student number.

Using Other Libraries

Athabasca University Library is a partner in two reciprocal loan programs; the Alberta Library (TAL) and the Canadian University Reciprocal Borrowing Agreement (CURBA). Access the Athabasca University Library website for additional information about these agreements.
