University Diploma in Arts
     
Regulations effective September 1, 2006
   

The University Diploma in Arts is designed for students who wish to obtain an intermediate credential that provides a grounding in the intellectual skills required of university studies. It is also a foundation for further studies in Humanities and Social Science. Athabasca University has developed program learning outcomes that describe the career options that may be available to you upon graduating. Students complete the program regulations in effect at the time of their enrolment.

Students who have completed a more senior-level credential (e.g., bachelor degree) may not enrol in the University Diploma in Arts program.

  Note: All 100-level ENGL courses and ENGL 255 will not satisfy the Humanities area of study requirement in the University Diploma in Arts program. These courses may count, however, as part of the total number of credits required for the diploma. Refer to English Writing Skills Requirement below.
     
     
  The following courses can satisfy either the Social Science area of study or the Science area of study requirements, but not both. Students wanting to use these courses to satisfy the Science area of study requirements must call Admissions and Evaluations Services and request the change upon completion of the course.
     
ENVS/GLST 253 Global Environmental Change: The Scientific and Social Issues (3)
PSYC 289 Psychology as a Natural Science (3)
PSYC 355 Cognitive Psychology (3)
PSYC 387 Learning (3)
PSYC 402 Biological Psychology (3)
PSYC 304 Research Methods in Psychology*
*Students who have obtained credit for PSYC 404 may not take 304.

  Note: English Writing Skills Requirement Students must meet the following English writing skills requirement in order to graduate:
• 
pass the Alberta Universities Writing Competence Test.

or
• 
hold credit in ENGL 255 (ENGL 255 will not satisfy the Humanities area of study. It will, however, count as part of the total number of credits required for the diploma);

or
• 
have a grade of B- (70 percent) or better in an Athabasca University English course above the preparatory (100) level;

or
• 
receive transfer credit for an English course in which a grade of B- or better was achieved.
