6.17 Withdrawing from a Course

Withdrawal time frames are important! You may withdraw from a course any time during the period of active study except once the final examination is deemed to have been written. If you are expecting a refund, refer to Section 5.11 Refunds and Returns.

Please read the following criteria carefully and note the specific time frames involved.

Note: Withdrawal procedures do not apply to challenge courses.

6.17.1 Academic Record

If you withdraw within 30 days after your course start date, you will have the record of registration deleted from your official record.

If you withdraw after 30 days and within 90 days after the course start date, your official record will indicate a “W” (Withdrawal) without credit and without academic penalty at Athabasca University.

If you withdraw more than 90 days after the course start date, and before the course contract end date, your official record will indicate a “WF” (Withdrawal/Failure), without academic penalty at Athabasca University.

If you fail to formally withdraw, you will be assigned a system failure, and your official record will indicate “F” (Failure), with academic penalty.

6.17.2 Procedure

All withdrawal requests must be submitted online or in writing to the Office of the Registrar and bear the student's signature. An e-mailed withdrawal request will not be accepted.

To formally withdraw from a course, complete and submit a Course Withdrawal Request Form included in the Forms Package of your learning resources or available online by logging into myAU.

The date of withdrawal will be the postmark on the request, or, if the notice is hand-delivered or faxed, the University date stamp, or the date of the online submission. Submit the Course Withdrawal Request Form either online, or by mail or fax to
