6.5 Admission Classifications

If you are a new student to Athabasca University, you must complete and submit the Undergraduate General Application Form before you register in a course. The form will ask that you select an admission classification:

   Unclassified (non-program, visiting and transfer
     students)

   Program
   Graduate
   Active

Other admission categories that require explanation include:

   Changing programs
   Changing status
   Inactive students

6.5.1 Unclassifed Students

Unclassified students include non-program students, visiting and transfer students (students who take AU courses for admission or transfer purposes to another institution). The same course registration requirements apply to unclassified students as program students. As an unclassified student, you are advised to obtain a Letter of Permission from your home institution before you register in an AU course. Ensure that the Letter of Permission indicates that the institution will accept the AU course in your program.

Unclassified/visiting students register in one or more AU course(s) for credit, but are not enrolled in an AU program. Because of this, Athabasca University does not evaluate previous post-secondary education or award transfer credit for students in the unclassified category. As an unclassified student, there is no limit to the total number of courses you may take without declaring a program. The maximum active course load of six, however, applies to both program and non-program students.

Unclassifed/visiting students must request that a transcript be sent to their home institution once they have completed the course(s). A Transcript Request Form is included in your learning resources package or login to myAU.

6.5.2 Program Students

Program students are enrolled in any of the undergraduate degrees, diplomas, or certificates offered by Athabasca University. Students who change from the unclassified to a program category may use credits earned while in the unclassified category provided the course(s) meets the requirements of the program, including any restrictions on the age of a course, if applicable.

6.5.3 Active Students

Active students are those who are currently registered in an Athabasca University course or who have completed or withdrawn from an AU course within the last 12 months. Students who complete courses on a Letter of Permission from Athabasca University also retain their active status.

As an active student, you can login to myAU, and have access to personal information, such as your library accounts, assignment marks, and course grades, or take care of administrative matters, such as registering for courses, booking examinations, or applying for extensions.

6.5.3.1 Changing Programs

Active students who wish to change from the unclassified status to an undergraduate program, or change from one undergraduate program to another undergraduate program, must complete and submit a new Undergraduate General Application Form. No fee is required.

If you are an active student, please login to myAU. Your login provides you access to all online student services provided by Athabasca University. If you are an inactive student, you may also access myAU. You will be required to reactivate your file and then complete the "change program" form.

The form will ask whether you require an evaluation of previous post-secondary studies. A fee is required for this service if it wasn't submitted previously.

You will fulfill the program regulations in effect at the time of your enrolment. Course work completed previously will be assessed toward the new credential.

6.5.3.2 Changing Status

If you are an active student who wishes to change from the unclassified status to an undergraduate program, you must complete and submit a new Undergraduate General Application Form or login to myAU. The form will ask whether you require an evaluation of your previous post-secondary studies. Refer to Section 6.8. A fee is required for this service, if it wasn't submitted previously.

You will fulfill the program regulations in effect at the time of your enrolment. Course work completed previously will be assessed toward the new credential.

6.5.4

Inactive Students

Inactive students are those who have not registered in an Athabasca University course within 12 months of the most recent course contract end date or the date of withdrawal from their last Athabasca University course. If you complete courses at other institutions without first obtaining a Letter of Permission from Athabasca University, you may be designated inactive and forfeit your enrolment status, and risk not receiving credit for the course.

To re-enrol and before you continue to take courses, you must complete and submit a new Undergraduate General Application Form, or access myAU, and follow the “reactivation” procedure.

You are required to fulfill the program regulations in effect at the time of your re-enrolment. You will also require a new evaluation of your previous course work. Refer to Section 6.8.

6.5.5

Graduate Students

Graduate students are required to wait for admission approval before they register in a graduate-level course.
