1.2. International Students

AU welcomes international students. Students enrol at AU, not only from every part of Canada and the US, but from 67 countries in all parts of the world.

International students follow the same general admission requirements in registering in AU courses; however, there are some program-specific and Citizenship and Immigration requirements that are described in detail in Section 6.1.3.

1.3. Information Centre

AU's Information Centre provides students one point of contact for all enquiries. If the Information Centre attendant can't answer a question, he or she will forward your call to the appropriate person. You can contact the Information Centre toll-free from anywhere in Canada or the US by phoning 800.788.9041.

If an issue is discussed with a staff member, it helps considerably in follow-up discussions, if a note of the staff member's name is kept.

Quick Online Feature

"Ask AU" or www.askau.ca is designed to give you an instant answer to most general questions about AU. If your question isn't found, a prompt will forward your query to the appropriate department.

1.4. Accreditation/Recognition

Athabasca University is a publicly funded institution of the Province of Alberta that reports to the government through the Minister of Alberta Learning. Through the Universities Act, the government authorizes Athabasca University Governing Council (AUGC) to grant degrees and govern its own affairs. Members of AUGC are appointed under orders-in-council of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta.

Governance

Athabasca University operates with a unicameral governance system. Athabasca University Governing Council (AUGC) incorporates the full responsibilities of a traditional board of governors (the overall policy committee), a general faculties council (responsible for academic policy) and a senate (fulfills the role of community liaison). AUGC membership comprises one chairperson, up to 8 public members, 2 academic staff, one student, one tutor, and one non-academic staff.

In 2002 Athabasca University achieved candidacy status with the US-based Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). The MSCHE provides assurance to the general public that accredited member institutions meet its standards.
