14. Academic Awards, Recognition, and Scholarships

Each year Athabasca University recognizes the dedication, determination, and success of its students. All students are considered for awards without application, unless specified otherwise. A list of award recipients is publicized twice a year: at convocation and in the late fall. Unless it is stated otherwise, awards will be calculated on grades obtained from July 1 of the previous year to June 30 of the current year. The academic awards program is administered by the Office of the Registrar.

For more information contact the Office of the Registrar or visit the Students Awards List.

To provide particular recognition to students and graduates who have achieved significant grade accumulations, two categories of recognition exist:

a) Honours List and
b) Undergraduate Degree Academic Achievement Recognition

a) Honours List

Athabasca University publishes an Honours List twice a year listing students who have a cumulative average of 85 percent or higher for Athabasca University courses completed towards an undergraduate credential.

Students who have completed the 30-, 60-, 90-, and 120-credit point in the six-month time period for which the list is produced will be included on the list. Students are also required to have completed a minimum of 15 Athabasca University credits.

b) Undergraduate Degree Academic Achievement Recognition

Graduation with Distinction
Undergraduate degree recipients who have achieved a cumulative average based only on Athabasca University courses, of 85 percent or higher, will be recognized by having the words "with distinction" placed on the parchment and official transcript.

Graduation with Great Distinction
Undergraduate degree recipients who have achieved a cumulative average, based only on Athabasca University courses, of 90 percent or higher, will be recognized by having the words "with great distinction" placed on the parchment and official transcript.

Students must meet minimum residency requirements in order that calculation of grades be considered towards convocating with great distinction or with distinction. In the case of the Bachelor of General Studies degree, students are required to complete a minimum of 30 Athabasca University credits towards their program.

Calculation of Cumulative Grades
Cumulative grades will be averaged according to the rounding-up-integer rule. That means, for example, that an average of 84.5 percent to 84.999 will be rounded to 85 percent for the purpose of academic recognition. Similarly, an average from 89.5 percent to 89.999 will be rounded to 90 percent.
