14. Transfer Programs, Arrangements
Transfer programs have been negotiated between Athabasca University and other institutions. These programs specify courses that may be taken at Athabasca University for credit towards the credential offered by the cooperating institution.
Pay particular attention to the conditions of admission at the other university.
Enrolment in a transfer program at Athabasca University does not guarantee admission to the other university. The credential specified is conferred by the cooperating institution, not by Athabasca University; therefore, students must meet the requirements of the cooperating institution.
14.1. Bachelor of Social Work, The University of Calgary
The four-year Bachelor of Social Work degree (BSW) is a key credential for the helping professions. In Alberta, the BSW is offered by The University of Calgary.
You may be interested in obtaining this degree but for a variety of reasons cannot undertake four years of full-time study at The University of Calgary. Through Athabasca University, you can take the first two years of the program via home study.
Program Information
Social work occurs in a changing, uncertain environment complicated by the conflicting expectations of government, the community, other professions, and clients. To prepare you for such an environment, the Faculty of Social Work at The University of Calgary emphasizes a core curriculum that provides the basis for social work practice.
The BSW program consists of 20 full-year courses (120 credits). Up to half of the program (60 credits) can be taken through Athabasca University. Credits earned at Athabasca University provide the foundation for social work courses and may include courses in Administrative Studies, Humanities, Science, and Social Science.
The remaining 60 credits must be taken through the Faculty of Social Work at The University of Calgary.
All of these courses are in social work.
Admission and Transfer Details
Specific program plans should be developed in consultation with advisors of the Faculty of Social Work at The University of Calgary. You are responsible for the completeness and accuracy of your program.
Athabasca University
To transfer credit from Athabasca University to the BSW program, first enrol as an Athabasca University unclassified student and choose courses to transfer to the Faculty of Social Work at The University of Calgary. The year before you are ready to begin taking social work courses, apply for admission to the Bachelor of Social Work program in the Faculty of Social Work at The University of Calgary. You may continue to take Athabasca University courses for credit as an unclassified student, but first obtain a Letter of Permission from The University of Calgary.
The University of Calgary
The University of Calgary's Bachelor of Social Work program limits how many students are admitted each year. Students are usually accepted into the program based on academic standing, the extent of their relevant experience, three letters of reference, and an academic paper.
Before applying for admission to the BSW program, you must successfully complete a minimum of ten full courses. Admission to the BSW program is not guaranteed by enrolment in the Athabasca University transfer program. You must meet the admission requirements of The University of Calgary and the Faculty of Social Work.
You must complete the Effective Writing Qualification Test unless an English course at the 200 or 300 level is taken in the first two years of the program. If you are unsure of your writing ability, take ENGL 155 or ENGL 255 from Athabasca University.

14.6. The Purchasing Management Association of Canada
The Purchasing Management Association of Canada (PMAC) has a well-established accreditation program that leads to the professional designation of Certified Professional Purchaser (CPP). This program was developed for persons entering the materials management field, those involved in the field, and for persons in management functions who wish to acquaint themselves with materials management expertise.
Those enrolled in the 1993-97+ program require:
- registration into PMAC's program
- four principles courses: Principles of Buying; Principles of Inventory and Operations Control; Transportation and Logistics; Principles of Quality;
- degree, diploma, or certificate in business studies (or a minimum of 360 hours of business studies);
- twelve PMAC seminar credits; and
- Advanced Purchasing Management course.
Successful completion of all required program components and membership in a PMAC district prepares the participant for the CPP examination.
In order to aid education opportunities, the PMAC employs Athabasca University's management study courses. That is, students may take Athabasca University courses that will fulfil the PMAC management study requirements. Upon completion of the Athabasca University course the student sends a transcript of the completed course to PMAC's Registrar. Participants who have formally registered into PMAC's program would contact PMAC's Registrar for a current status report.
Taking a PMAC approved course does not register a student into PMAC's accreditation program.
14.6.1. Certificate in Purchasing
PMAC now offers a Certificate in Purchasing that provides students with recognition of technical competency in purchasing and supply management. Individuals interested in applying for the certificate need to provide proof of completion of the following courses: Principles of Buying; Principles of Inventory and Operations Control; Transportation and Logistics; Principles of Quality; and completion of six PMAC seminar credits.
Proof of completion includes copies of certificates, seminar notification and status reports. This is an end-point program and no registration is required.
