Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Counselling Program Plans

Students normally progress through the diploma program at a fixed pace. The time commitment will depend on whether you decide to:

• apply to ladder into the Master of Counselling Program
• exit the Post-Baccalaureate program with the diploma (Terminal Diploma Program)

The normal program plan id four courses per year; one in the fall, one in winter, and two in the spring/summer semester. All students are required to complete the first year of the program as a cohort, completing the first four courses in a standard sequence. The courses have been designed to build sequentially the foundational competencies required for your success in the rest of the program. For most students, four courses per year is the ideal pace to complete their program, as it ensures core courses are available and you have maximum flexibility in selecting elective courses.

We strongly recommend you consider the time commitment involved in online graduate work as you prepare for the program. You should plan to devote a minimum of 15 hours per week to each course.

Please Note:

• This program plan is designed only for student who are certain they will exit the program without laddering into the Master of Counselling.
• We highly recommend that you select GCAP 635: Intervening to Facilitate Client Change as your Option Course I because it is typically completed at the Summer Institute alongside GCAP 671: Development a Working Alliance.

Laddering Diploma Program Plan

Please Note:

• Students are expected to progress through the program according to the above course sequence. After completing five courses, you may apply to ladder into the Master of Counselling program.
• You may apply to ladder once you have started your fifth course. Once final grades are in for the fifth course, the application may be approved and students may be permitted to continue into the Master of Counselling program. If your GPA drops below 3.0 with the fifth course, you will be required to exit the program after completing the sixth course (which may then be an elective course).
