Graduate Program Application

Please read all the application procedures carefully prior to commencing with your application. You may want to print a copy for your reference.

Application Deadlines

MHS and MN: Generalist Programs: The CNHS must receive the fully complete application package by March 1 for consideration for admission to the MHS or MN: Generalist program starting in September of the same year. Incomplete or late application packages will not be assessed nor retained for consideration for admission the following year.

ANP Programs: The CNHS must receive the fully complete application package by December 1 for consideration for admission to the MN:ANP or PMD:ANP (formerly called AGD:ANP) program starting the following May. Incomplete or late application packages will not be assessed nor retained for consideration for admission the following year.

Application Procedures for ALL CNHS Graduate Programs

There are nine steps in the application process:

  1. Complete the Application to the Faculty of Graduate Studies online through the AU Office of the Registrar. Read the information on this page and then click on "Graduate Application" and complete the required information. Be sure to select the appropriate program from the Application for Graduate Studies – Select Program page.

    IMPORTANT: If you have been a student at Athabasca University (AU) or have received an AU student ID number as part of a previous application:

    • you must first login by clicking the login link (left-hand side, under the General heading)
    • click on Graduation Application and complete the required steps
    • be sure to select the appropriate Graduate Programyou are applying to.

    If you are new to AU, click here, complete the application, and you will be assigned a student ID number. Your AU Student ID number will be used to access all AU services and resources.

  2. Following submission of your online application fee (non-refundable), proceed to the Centre for Nursing and Health Studies Graduate Student Admission System.
  3. Be sure to select the same program as 1.c. above:
    • Post-Masters Diploma: Advanced Nursing Practice (PMD:ANP)
    • Master of Nursing: Advanced Nursing Practice (MN:ANP)
    • Master of Nursing: Generalist (MN:GEN)
    • Master of Health Studies (MHS)
  4. Complete all components of the online Graduate Program Application which includes the following:
    • Academic background
    • Work experience
    • Rationale for applying to the program and other pertinent information
    • Preview the specific CNHS Program Application information so that you know what is required.
  5. After all components have been completed and submitted, click on the "Proceed to Final Review" button in the check list. At that point you will no longer have access to view or modify your application.
  6. You can make changes or additions to your application at any time prior to the application deadline (and prior to submitting your application for final review). You will be able to track completion on various components of the online application through an online Application Checklist.

    To check your application status, return to Centre for Nursing and Health Studies Graduate Student Admissions System.

  7. Applications for admission must be submitted electronically using the online system mentioned above. Applications will not be accepted by mail or fax.
  8. In addition to the online application, you must submit one complete Hardcopy Applications Materials Package. The package must include:
    • Hardcopy application checklist;
    • Letters of reference (required);
    • Transcripts (required);
    • Application for transfer credit (optional);
    • International Qualifications Assessment Services (IQAS) or World Education Services (WES) (if required);
    • For applicants without Canadian citizenship: Photocopy of either permanent resident documentation or study authorization/permit will need to be provided;
    • For Post Masters Diploma & Advanced Nursing Practice applicants: Photocopy of Nursing Registration and Copy of current Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate. Photocopy of Nursing Practitioner (NP) license if available.

  9. Mail or courier the completed hardcopy application to:

    Do not send the package until you have collected all required documents. The assembled Hardcopy Application Materials Package must be received by our Program Office on or prior to the application deadline.

    Note: All transcripts, references, test scores, and other documents become the property of Athabasca University and will not be returned to the applicants or forwarded to another program or institution.

    Track receipt of hardcopy documents and the status your application online through the Centre for Nursing and Health Studies Graduate Student Admissions System. It is your responsibility to ensure that all components of your application package have been received by the application deadline. Allow sufficient time prior to the deadline for the assembled package containing letters of reference, transcripts, etc. to be received.

    Note: Once the file has been reviewed the status of your application will be updated. The CNHS office is unable to provide information on the status of your application beyond what is noted in the online Status section of the Centre for Nursing and Health Studies Graduate Student Admissions System.
