MDE Program Application Procedure

  1. Complete and submit one of the below mentioned online MDE Application forms (if you haven't already done so), along with the electronic application fee.

    For applicants new to Athabasca University, who have not previously received an Athabasca University student ID number, please use the form MDE Application (1) to complete and submit your application.

    For applicants who have previously received an Athabasca University student ID number, please use the form: MDE Application (2) to complete and submit your application. Please note: you will need to "Login" before completing the form, using your student ID number.

    Should you not wish to apply online, the forms may be requested by e-mailing the Centre for Distance Education or by calling 1.800.788.9041 (ext. 6179).

  2. Complete and submit the MDE Questionnaire. This form and the accompanying forms (see below) can be downloaded.
  3. Submit an up-to-date résumé.
  4. Submit official transcripts* directly from an accredited institution showing the granting of a baccalaureate degree.

    *Applicants submitting any official documents (e.g., transcripts) in a language other than English must provide an official translation of such documents. If the credential being submitted has been earned outside Canada and the US, documentation attesting to its equivalence to a Canadian baccalaureate degree is required. Such documentation can be obtained from:

  5. Submit three Letters of Recommendation*; including one from someone who is familiar with the applicant’s academic skills. Applicants may download the MDE Reference Template to send to the referees.

    It is the applicant’s responsibility to notify his or her referees that, in accordance with the Province of Alberta’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, the information contained in the letter of reference is not considered to be confidential.

    The applicant, upon request, may view the information. Contact M. Cleveland-Innes, Program Director, MDE, for more information.

  6. Complete and submit the MDE Record Card.



    Application Deadline:

    The Centre for Distance Education must receive all application materials by March 1 for consideration for admission into the program starting in September of the same year.
